Henry "Hank" Pym was born in Detroit to intelligent but humble parents. His father was a research biologist and his mother was a concert pianist. They regarded their precocious son with gentle awe and, when he tested as a genius at the tender age of five, they encouraged him in their quiet way. Hank became accustomed to getting what he wanted when he wanted it and, when he went off to college at age thirteen, he was confident that he would take the academic world by storm. Unfortunately, because although Hank was brilliant, he was also deeply fragile. During his sophomore year he suffered a nervous breakdown and spent two months in a mental institution, where he was diagnosed as severely bipolar and prescribed lithium. Upon his release, he transferred schools and finished out his masters degree in a state of depressed shock. Doctorates followed quickly after, and by the time Hank had had enough of the academic world, he had a certain degree of expertise in quantum physics, robotics, cybernetics, artificial intelligence, biochemistry, and entomology. During the endless round of writing and presenting papers, Henry met his future wife, molecular biologist Janet Van Dyne. |
After a quick, blissful romance the two were married and enjoyed several years of marital happiness. It didn't last, Hank went off his meds and the two got into a massive fight that ended with Jan leaving and sleeping with Tony Stark. They made up, but Hank refused to take the lithium anymore, insisting instead on an ever-changing lineup of drugs. This period in their married life was punctuated by massive fights during which the pair engaged in mutual physical abuse, although neither were ready for divorce. They were hired on at S.H.I.E.L.D. to help with the super-soldier program, and Hank utilized S.H.I.E.L.D.'s resources to take samples of Jan's blood and use them to jump-start his own powers. Hank has the ability to alter his size, going from the size of an ant all the way to a maximum height of 59 feet and 11 inches. He also possesses a helmet that allows him to control ants. He is also a natural genius, and came by both of his powers artificially. |
